A 0.5 ft³ bag is one example; check the volume on your chosen product.
Include tax, delivery or collection costs if they apply.
Check minimums and whether the yard sells by cubic yard or short ton.
Subtract passengers and gear before dividing by the bag's labeled weight.
Start with the volume and the two local quotes
When planning a rock landscape project, one of the first procurement decisions is whether to purchase pre-bagged stone from a big-box home improvement center or order loose bulk material delivered by dump truck from a local quarry.
Bags are easy to carry through a narrow gate and buy a few at a time. Bulk stone can reduce handling and packaging, but delivery fees, minimum orders, and the place where the truck can unload change the comparison.
There is no universal bag count where bulk becomes cheaper
For the same finished volume, compare rounded-up bag count × price per bag with supplier-rounded bulk order × price per yard or ton + delivery. Twenty 0.5 ft³ bags contain 10 ft³, or about 0.37 yd³; that conversion alone says nothing about which order costs less.
| Comparison Factor | Retail Bagged Rock (0.5 cu ft) | Quarry Bulk Delivery (Tons / Yards) |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity to price | Round up total ft³ ÷ labeled bag ft³ | Round up planned yd³ to the supplier's selling increment |
| Material price | Use the current price for the chosen bag | Use a quote for the same stone size and finish |
| Delivery Surcharge | Check pickup time, fuel, tax, or bag delivery | Ask for the actual fee, minimum, and unloading location |
| Handling Logistics | Hand-carried individually; fits through narrow gates | Dumped in one pile; requires shovel and wheelbarrow |
| Packaging Waste | One package per bag unless sold in reusable containers | Loose delivery can avoid retail bag packaging |
Worked example: 200 square feet of river rock
Consider a 200 square foot shrub border requiring a 3-inch layer of river rock:
- Volume Required: (200 sq ft × 3 inches) / 324 = 1.85 cubic yards (50 cubic feet).
- Weight Required: 1.85 cubic yards × 1.35 tons/yd³ = 2.50 short tons (5,000 lbs).
Option A: Buying 0.5 Cu Ft Retail Bags
50 cubic feet / 0.5 cu ft per bag = 100 retail bags. If a local store quotes $5.00 per bag, that illustrative material total is $500.00 before tax or delivery. Divide the bags into trips using your vehicle's remaining rated payload and the chosen bag's labeled weight.
Option B: Ordering Bulk Quarry Delivery
If your supplier sells in whole yards, 1.85 yd³ becomes a 2.0 yd³ order. At an illustrative quote of $45.00 per short ton, 2.0 yd³ × 1.35 short tons/yd³ costs $121.50 in stone. An illustrative $85 delivery fee makes the total $206.50. Get actual quotes before deciding.
In this example, bulk is $293.50 less before tax and handling. A different bag price, bulk minimum, stone selection, or delivery distance can reverse the result. The river rock bag calculator lets you enter your own bag and bulk prices.
Vehicle Weight Limitations and Safety
Look for your vehicle's payload label and subtract everyone and everything else you plan to carry. Compare the remainder with the bag's labeled or measured weight. Stone weight and vehicle payload vary by product and vehicle.
maximum bags per trip = floor(remaining rated payload ÷ actual lb per bag)At the site's illustrative 1.35-short-ton/yd³ river rock density, one cubic yard weighs about 2,700 lb. Ask the supplier for the actual load weight and compare it with your specific vehicle's remaining payload, axle, and tire ratings. Arrange delivery if the load exceeds those limits.
When Bagged Rock Is Actually the Better Choice
Bags can be a practical choice in these situations:
- Restricted access: Hand-carried bags can reach enclosed beds even when a truck can only unload at the street.
- Small touch-ups: Buy just the amount needed to fill a low spot, planter, or tree ring.
- Specialty finishes: Compare the exact product; a polished or colored bagged stone may have no local loose equivalent.
