From a measured border to a bag or bulk order
Imagine a 20 × 4 ft border filled to a finished depth of 3 in. Its 80 sq ft surface takes 20 cu ft, or 0.74 cu yd, before extra material. A 10% allowance makes the order 22 cu ft, or 0.81 cu yd. At 2,600 lb per loose cubic yard, that is about 2,119 lb (1.06 US short tons). A 0.25 cu ft bag takes 88 whole bags; a 0.5 cu ft bag takes 44. The stone is the same volume in either case, but package sizes change the bag count.
Choose depth by the pebble you can actually see
Beach Pebbles Direct uses about 2 in as its landscape planning depth. That is a useful starting point, not a rule for every stone size or uneven site. A shallow layer of large 2–3 in pebbles may expose the surface below; a small ½–1 in grade may need less volume for a similar visual finish. Spread a sample over a square foot at the intended depth, then adjust the input to the appearance you want. A top-up over existing stone needs only the added depth.
| Finished depth | One cubic yard | 0.25 cu ft bag | 0.5 cu ft bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 in | 162 sq ft | 1.5 sq ft | 3 sq ft |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft | 1 sq ft | 2 sq ft |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft | 0.75 sq ft | 1.5 sq ft |
These figures are geometric layer volumes. A seller may quote a lower field yield based on site variation, placement, or the visual finish expected for its grade. Confirm the basis of its coverage claim before substituting it for a measured depth.
Read the bag, yard, and pallet labels separately
ASTM C29/C29M is a method for measuring loose or compacted aggregate bulk density; it does not assign one beach pebble weight. The calculator’s editable weight is a supplier example and does not represent a laboratory result for every product. Compare actual quotes with the bulk versus bagged rock guide.
Plan the finish as carefully as the quantity
Some suppliers group beach pebbles under egg rock; others list egg rock as a separate rounded stone. Check the actual product grade and label before carrying a bag volume or bulk weight from one listing to another. For ordinary rounded river stone, compare the river rock calculator.
Beach pebble questions
How many beach pebble bags cover an 80 square foot bed?
At a 3-inch finished depth, 80 square feet takes 20 cubic feet. With a 10% ordering allowance, plan 22 cubic feet: 88 bags labeled 0.25 cubic foot or 44 bags labeled 0.5 cubic foot. Round up only after dividing by the volume on your actual bag.
How much does a cubic yard of Mexican beach pebbles weigh?
The loose bulk weight depends on the product and how it is measured. West Seattle Stone lists 2,600 pounds per cubic yard for its 1–2-inch black pebbles; another supplier gives roughly 1.3–1.4 US short tons per yard. Use the figure for the stone you are buying instead of treating one weight as universal.
Is egg rock the same as Mexican beach pebble?
The labels can overlap: some sellers group beach pebbles with egg rock, while others sell them as separate products. Match the actual grade, color, finish, package volume, and supplier weight before reusing a coverage or weight estimate.
Will landscape fabric stop weeds in a beach pebble bed?
Permeable fabric can separate the pebbles from soil, but it will not keep the surface weed-free. Windblown soil and seeds can collect among the stones. Remove weeds early and keep leaves and debris off the bed.
