Field Contractor Rule of Thumb:

Always excavate to the bottom of the base course layer. Never lay your base stone on top of virgin grass or unexcavated organic topsoil. If excavating 8 inches total depth, expect the loose spoil pile to swell by 20% to 30% in volume when loading into a dump trailer.
